Bringing Them Home
Connecting Home was established in response to the Bringing Them Home Report, understanding that past removal policies still affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.
Bringing Them Home
The Bringing them Home Report is a significant document in Australian history. It was the result of a national inquiry that investigated the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families. The report, which was tabled in Federal Parliament on 26th May1997, marked a pivotal moment in the healing journey of many Stolen Generations survivors.
This comprehensive report documents the history and consequences of the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities and includes 54 recommendations.
Over two decades on, the Bringing Them Home report remains just as relevant. Independent reviews show limited implementation of those recommendations. This has created additional distress for many Stolen Generations members as well as a ripple effect to descendant generations. For example, young people with parents, grandparents or great grandparents who were taken are:
- 50% more likely to be charged by police
- 30% less likely to be in good health
- 10% less likely to have a job.
